Mandelstamm, Max Emanuel
(1839-1912)
   Russian opthalmologist and Zionist of Lithuanian origin, nephew of Benjamin and Leon Mandelstamm. He was born in Zagare. He opened a clinic in Kiev, where his practice flourished, and lectured in ophthalmology at Kiev University. A founder of the H ibbat Zion movement in Russia, he became an associate of Theodor Herzl. At the Seventh Zionist Congress, he participated in the Founding Conference of the Jewish Territorial Organization. He was the head of the emigration offfice established by the Territorialists in Kiev to organize the emigration of Jews to Galeveston, Texas.
